What a Transfer Certificate is used for
A Transfer Certificate (TC), also called a School Leaving Certificate in some states, records that a student has left the school and lists details such as date of birth, class last studied, date of admission and leaving, and conduct. The next school almost always asks for it at admission. Colleges often ask for the Class 12 TC as well, together with the migration certificate where boards require one.
TC application checklist
- Student’s full name exactly as in school records.
- Class, section and admission / SR number — this lets the office find records instantly.
- Clear reason: transfer, shifting, passing out, change of board.
- Request for extra documents you need: character certificate, last report card, bonafide certificate.
- Statement about fees and library dues.
- Parent/guardian signature and phone number.
Common reasons and how to phrase them
| Situation | Suggested wording |
|---|---|
| Parent’s job transfer | “Due to my transfer to Pune, our family is shifting…” |
| Shifting to own house / another city | “Due to shifting of our residence to …” |
| After Class 10 / 12 | “…has passed Class 12 (CBSE 2026) and needs the TC for college admission.” |
| Change of school within city | “…for admission in another school closer to our residence.” |
| Health reasons | “…due to health reasons, my ward will continue studies at …” |
Tips to get the TC quickly
- Clear fees, transport dues and return library books before applying.
- Submit the application at least a week before you need the TC.
- Keep a photocopy with the school’s received stamp and date.
- Check the TC for spelling, date of birth and dates before leaving the office.
- For admission in another state or board, ask the new school whether a counter-signature is needed.
