Which NOC do you need?
| NOC type | Issued by | Common purposes |
|---|---|---|
| Employer NOC | Company HR / manager | Passport, visa, higher studies, part-time course, joining another organisation |
| Vehicle sale NOC | Registered owner (seller) | Transfer of ownership to buyer; proof of sale date |
| Landlord NOC | Property owner | Gas connection, address update, electricity meter in tenant’s name, business registration |
Employer NOC: what to check
Print it on company letterhead with the company seal and an authorised signatory. Include the employee’s designation and joining date, and limit the NOC to a specific purpose. Government employees applying for a passport generally use the specific identity certificate / NOC formats prescribed by their department and the passport authority — check those before using a generic letter.
Vehicle sale NOC: protect yourself as a seller
- Write the exact date and time of sale. Liability for challans and accidents after this moment shifts to the buyer.
- Include registration, chassis and engine numbers.
- Keep a copy signed by both seller and buyer.
- Complete the official ownership transfer promptly; the NOC alone does not change RTO records.
- If there is a loan on the vehicle, you also need the bank or financier’s NOC.
Landlord NOC: keep it simple
State the property address, the tenant’s name, since when they live there, and the purpose. Add a line that the NOC gives no ownership rights. Attach a copy of the rent agreement and the owner’s ID or electricity bill if the agency asks for it.
